Interlude: Talking Across Disciplines

Part of Moral Motives & STEM-informed Action

Selected workshop members replied to the following question: What’s something your field takes for granted that other workshop members may disagree with?

Field Assumption
Anthropology Most people (without institutional power) are trying to do the best they can. That means there’s more incompetence than malice in sci- comm, but that doesn’t make it any less dangerous or alarming.
Cognitive & social psychology Cooperation is a human default (kinda, sorta, mostly).
Informal learning Science is a construct that is negotiated in every learning interaction: making things relevant to learners and helping them develop interest, engage, and connect to their identity means inviting them to change science as they learn about it, define it, challenge it, and develop a critical lens.
Journalism Journalism is a chance to shed light on the truth.
Journalism studies “Objectivity” as commonly described is neither possible nor desirable.
Linguistics “Language” encompasses all kinds of semiotic and interpersonal resources, not just “words.”
Philosophy The personal is political. So the line between personal/moral motives & politics is fuzzy. We have to look for the political reasons behind motives.
Social psychology People overestimate the role of “personality” and underestimate the role of context in human behavior.

Interludio: charlas interdisciplinarias
